Jordan Routledge was born to a Pakistani father and a white English mother, thus mirroring in real life the situation of the character he played in his first film, though his parents had separated by the time of his early fame. He was 13 years old when he was auditioned for the role of Sajid in East is East, after his aunt spotted a casting call on the television programme This Morning. A newcomer with minimal prior acting experience (he had been one of the Three Wise Men in a school Nativity at the age of 6), he nevertheless won out over 400 other young actors in auditions for the role. His only other acting role was two years later, as a boy scout who's saved from drowning by Jimmy Spud in the film Gabriel & Me. He went on to become an accountant.
