ORAL/ANAL FIXATION AS A CAUSE OF PEDERASTY BY PARKER ROSSMAN
The following is one of the sections of the fourth chapter of Dr. Parker Rossman’s Sexual Experience Between Men and Boys (originally published in 1976), entitled "Why Do They?", introduced here, and intended to explain why in general some men desire boys, though in practice limited in its evidence to what was then recent in countries with a Judaeo-Christian tradition.
One’s human nature is formed in infancy, with both nature and society as partners in the creation of personality. It is only to be expected, therefore, that many pederasts — and especially those who trace their inclination to very early childhood — should propose a cluster of theories around Freudian concepts, seeing sexual preferences as shaped by the way a child is handled at the oral and anal stages of his infant development. Early influences no doubt shape sexual tastes just as they do food preferences. It may well be that the newborn infant is a blank page upon which parents and relatives, as well as other societal influences, early write the script which determines sexual development. Oral and anal eroticism may well be kept alive and cultivated by regular caressing in infancy and throughout childhood, much as Greek slaves were sometimes eroticized from infancy. In some societies mothers and grandmothers deliberately sooth a crying or troubled child with such genital caresses. No pederasts questioned could discover if such was the case in their own infancy. Nor, in retrospect, can they understand the dynamics of family emotions which might have influenced the development of their sexual inclinations and preferences at such an early age.
One pederast writes: “Freud makes sense to me, not so much intellectually, as in my bones.” Another says: “I was too early aware of being erotically aroused by boys to accept any theory of pederasty that is not rooted in infancy or very early childhood. Why should society blame me or punish me for having a nature and overpowering desires which developed so young? Even before I went to school I was erotically sensitive to boys who were in the first flush of puberty, especially when they were aroused sexually. When I was three or four I had a crush on an uncle who at that time was about fourteen. I am told that he and I greatly enjoyed each other earlier than I can remember. Isn’t there a kind of imprinting — the process by which a chick raised with ducks may come to think he is a duck — at crucial formative emotional moments, perhaps when an infant is sexually aroused? I don’t know whether my young uncle played with me sexually or not, but he certainly was the subject of my earliest erotic fantasies. It may well be that I am still attracted to boys who remind me of him.”
Sexual experience begins early and many pederasts report discovering erotic pleasures of narcotic quality at a very tender age. Some of them feel that they were “liberated youngsters” who were not so inhibited as to be unable to enjoy themselves sexually from a very early age.
